PLUS CA CHANGE ....

It's been a while since I did a restaurant review, mainly because (a) I don't eat out much these days, (b) when I do I can only manage one plate and MAYBE a dessert, and (c) I'm getting on in years and going out is more faff than it's worth. But I did visit one establishment recently with Cracklin' Rosie and Mr Greenfingers which was so good I felt it warranted dusting off the old blog.

Tiger used to be called The Open and for reasons lost in the mists of time had the rear end of a pig sticking out of its front window.  I reviewed it many years ago.  It has always done fusion cuisine, back then it was Italian-Thai, now it's a kind of Pan-Asian-Belgian-Italian.  The decor is more modern, with a huge Japanese mural on one wall.

I must confess to having been teetotal for the past several months, partly by choice - just gone off the taste of wine - but ultimately on doctor's orders.  So while Rosie and Mr G sipped on their Apérol Spritz and G&T, I had a virgin basil smash mocktail, which was delicious.

We went for two lots of starters each.  Mr G had scampi tempura with sriracha mayo and teriyaki, and Rosie had a beetroot carpaccio with fresh mint, shallots, coriander, lime, nuoc-mam and fried onions. I had a chicken karaage, Korean style sesame fried chicken bites drizzled with spicy gochujang honey and spring onions,   Then Mr G had a duck curry panang,  I had a beef carpaccio "Bò Tái Chanh”, the same dressing as Rosie's beetroot dish, while she demolished a classic smashed burger with chips on the side.

I still miss the pig's bum though.

Rosie and her two homegirls Hermione and Hepzibah, aka The Desperate Housewives of Kraainem, recently went to investigate Le Shake, a long-standing neighbourhood restaurant near Place Stockel formerly called Le Shake Hands, which always used to make me smile.   Now revamped with prices to match, it offers what appear to be much the same dishes but on square plates.  Our Ladies Who Lunch shared a portion of calamari and a portion of Iberian ham mini croquettes to start, followed by a duck parmentier (duck cottage pie), salmon with a miso lacquer, and a fillet steak.  More stylish and chic as befits the increasing gentrification of the suburbs, and reportedly very tasty, but I get the impression Rosie preferred it as the comfy and affordable local it was before.  Still, Apérol Spritzes all round!
